One of my ancestors,George Footitt, worked as a Maltster in Ross. He had come from Spalding in Lincolnshire. Does anyone know if there are records of the names of workers at any of the Ross breweries between about 1850 and 1880? I would be interested to find out where he worked.

My comment is based on experience of malting and brewing history of a different area but ... show moremaltsters did not necessarily work for breweries. Malt itself was a major agricultural product, much in demand by city breweries. Malting was a great way of adding value to locally grown barley. A maltster could be the man shovelling the barley along the malting floor, the foreman who ran the malting on a day to day basis, or the owner of a large malting business (usually easy enough to tell which from the house he is living in).
