My comment is based on experience of malting and brewing history of a different area but ... show moremaltsters did not necessarily work for breweries. Malt itself was a major agricultural product, much in demand by city breweries. Malting was a great way of adding value to locally grown barley. A maltster could be the man shovelling the barley along the malting floor, the foreman who ran the malting on a day to day basis, or the owner of a large malting business (usually easy enough to tell which from the house he is living in).
